In 1894, Paul Hubbard, quarterback for the Gallaudet University Bison, needed a way to call plays in ASL without the opposing team reading his signs in the open. His solution was to gather his teammates into a tight circle, out of view. Every huddle in football today, from Pop Warner to the Super Bowl, runs on his design. Access isn't retrofitted onto the game after the fact. It's the innovation the rest of the world adopts once it sees it work.
